How to compare XML files
Add your two files
Drop the original and the changed XML file on the boxes below, or paste the XML straight in. You can drop both files at once.
Choose your options
Decide whether whitespace, letter case or comments should count. You can also skip fields that always change, like timestamps.
Review the differences
Every change is listed with its exact location, such as /inventory/product[@sku="TEA-002"]. Switch to side by side to see both files lined up.
What Matchcheck does
Matches elements by ID
Elements with an id, name, key or sku attribute are paired by that value, so one deleted record shows as one removal, not a cascade of changes.
Ignores formatting noise
Indentation, line breaks and the order of attributes never count as differences.
Exact locations
Every change shows where it is, like /catalog/book[@id="bk102"]/price, so you can find it in your own file.
Reports you can share
Download an HTML report or a CSV of all changes to send to a colleague or attach to a ticket.
Questions and answers
Are my XML files uploaded anywhere?
No. The comparison runs in your browser. Your files never leave your device, which makes Matchcheck safe for configuration files, invoices and other private data.
Does the order of attributes matter?
No. <item id="1" type="a"> and <item type="a" id="1"> are treated as identical. The order of elements does count, because it often carries meaning in XML.
What happens if my XML is invalid?
Matchcheck tells you which file has the problem and gives the line and column of the first error, so you can fix it and compare again.
How large can the files be?
Up to 25 MB each. Files with tens of thousands of lines usually compare in a second or two.
Can I compare SVG, RSS or config files?
Yes. Any XML-based format works, including SVG, RSS, Atom, KML, GPX, XSD, XSLT, .config and .csproj files.
